Have you ever seen a soft shelled egg?
The other day I went out to collect eggs, and I saw that sitting on the floor of the coop and had no idea what it was until I picked it up.
The membrane just inside the shell was intact, but the shell was crumbly and not yet formed. It felt weird. A lot of people have asked me if I ate it. Would you?
This is Melon, the chicken. I love our chickens. They have been a delight to raise, and it is so fun to see them pecking around the yard and garden.
This is Dandelion. He's not so charming, and you can see I have caught him mid-crow. "But it is not morning," you say. Guess what? Roosters crow all day long. And if you happen to have about 50 roosters crowing two houses down, then they crow even more trying to establish themselves as the "head rooster." Who knew? He's up for grabs. We expect that he will be tasty.

I like MY eggs hard-boiled, and cut up on my salad. Or deviled.Or scrambled, with salsa or Louisiana. Wow. I seem to enjoy them a few ways.
Still makes me giggle that you HAVE chickens.
you know i live in hippie-ville because i read it as "co-op" instead of "coop" and i immediately wanted a pesto roll with fresh goat cheese, served to me by a woman with dreadlocks and underarm hair whose shirt reads "it's a V thing... you wouldn't understand."
and she's right, i wouldn't. i just want my pesto roll with goat cheese. please.
Dandelion is a very pretty rooster.
You are the Martha Stewart of Utah, aren't you? Seriously, what can't/don't you do? I read your post about all you did over the holidays. You make it look all so easy.
I've heard of soft boiled but never soft shelled. I am roasting a chicken tonight. I will think of poor Dandelion.
I call a drumstick! I think it's about time Dandelion was "put down". I mean, I witnessed how he treats those hens...it's highly inappropriate.
So did the egg ever harden up? I have a hard enough time eating something that came from a chicken's bottom, I don't think I could handle a soft-shelled egg. I thought you never ate anthing you had named. Is Dandelion really on the short list?
We have chickens too and let me just say, I HATE roosters!!! In fact, we had a mean one a couple years back. He'd attack our kids! We put him out of our misery. he he
We love our homegrown eggs. I've seen those soft one. Pretty weird.
I just showed my hubby your pictures. He said the soft egg is because the chicken isn't getting enough calcium. You can get oyster shell at an IFA or or feed them your old, dried egg shells crushed up. That works too.
Yikes - that is one freaky egg! Cracks me up that you actually have chickens...how brave! They'd drive me crazy for sure!
Thanks for the reminder, Emily. I had forgotten about the quickest rape I've ever seen...not the only rape, mind you, after that duck a few years ago...
What a crazy egg though....(awkward silence after sharing TMI)
