A Chosen Vessel

billie

The other night as I was driving to pick Todd up from school, God blessed me with the rarest and most fleeting of gifts. For about 10 minutes, the combination of a long day and allergies allowed me to sing JUST like Billie Holiday. I was almost as good as David Sedaris. So I milked it, and all the way to campus I sang “All of Me” at the top of my lungs. Well, that was the only song I could remember, and only one verse of it at that, but perhaps someone along 800 North needed to hear Billie sing that song that night, and I was there to make it happen. Thank you, Lord, for making me a vessel for good…or for good jazz anyway.

I wish I could have been a fly on the wall. I would have been buzzing the tune as loud as I could along with you. Surely a mere fly could have enjoyed this chosen vessel without distracting her, right?

I remember once, in 8th grade, I was sick and I sang just like Biz Markie.

I love: Singing in the car, windows down, music loud.

So much more than EVER in the shower.

The Lord had prepared you with vast amounts of codeine so that you would be ready when he needed you to deliver just such a rendition to some needy person on 800 north. Mysterious ways, indeed.

Is this some frightening foreshadowing? Dependence on narcotics, singing Billie Holiday...don't die, Carrie, we love you! Ok, I like to dramatize your liberal use of medicine...I should've had that Vikadin prescription filled..ya know, just in case.

I was putting on the show of my life rockin' in the big, white mini-van down I-15 the other day singing "This Little Light of Mine". I was clapping, swinging my head, and even doing the trills when I happened to glance in my rearview mirror and caught both of my boys staring at me...one was even gribbing the sides of his car seat. Jake told me I could turn it up again but not sing. Hmmm...
