Rest In Peace, Fiona (May 2000-September 2010)

Some of you might be visiting my blog hoping to see about the amazing, wonderful, FUN trip we took to visit Mom and Dad in Stockholm. I promise that blog is coming.

One reason I haven't posted said blog is because Fiona became really sick when we got home and progressed really quickly until today when she passed away here at home with Todd at her side.

Fiona was 10 years old and had had a happy life. We are very sad and will miss her a lot.

Here are some things we will miss about Fiona:

...her eagerness to see us every time we came home... even if it was from getting the mail.
...her soft, soft ears.
...her love of sniffing and exploring everything.
...her love of swimming in any body of water deep enough to allow it.
...her love of playgrounds and slides.
...her corn-chip-smelling feet.
...people asking us if she was a puppy.
...cold noses asking for a petting.
...never having any food on the floor, ever.
...her love of sticks and "having a job" to do on walks.
...her sticking her head between your legs from behind and looking up at you.
...her singing.
...the good tricks.
...her love of learning new tricks.
...nosing her puzzle ball around the house.
...playing hide-and-go-seek.
...her snap to attention upon hearing "kitty" or "birdie."
...the begrudging way she posed for pictures.
...the way she ignored the nieces and nephews and refused to do anything they asked.
...how easy she was to potty train.
...her pretty eyes and they way she looked up while resting her head on your knee.

Here are some things we will NOT miss about Fiona:

...her waking us up on windy nights.
...her pawing the bed when she was ready to go out.
...her love of chocolate (and the aftermath).
...her making people cry when they rang the door bell.
...her relentless pursuit of items from the pantry including flour, wheat bulger, and mini marshmallows.
...her stuffing food down the corners of the couch and chairs.
...biting crotches.
...running her cold nose up the backs of ladies' legs in skirts.
...staring at me from halfway behind a corner.
...finding shoes and pantry items stashed away in her secret places.
...picking up her poop.
...her love of chewing through straps on purses, bags, luggage, and seat belts.

Here are some of our favorite photos of Fiona (if you can believe it, Fiona was born beyond the boundaries of digital cameras, so I will have to add photos of her earliest years later when I have time to scan some in).

Fiona in the Cone of Shame.

Fiona modeling some baby gifts.

Fiona and Cubby. See how she is leaning away...

Fiona keeping me company when I was sick.

Fiona doing her job on a walk.

Typical Fiona.

Fiona enjoying the sun.

Last night we went for a walk.

Poor girl, you could tell she wasn't feeling good, but she loves being outside.

Here's the part where I end with a nice dignified picture of Fiona, but I have to find it and scan it in.

Fiona brought us a lot of joy and was good company for us for 10 years and 3 months of our 10 years and 7 months of being married. In spite of her many faults, Fiona had many friends and admirers who will also miss her dearly. We thank you for your prayers and love. Please remember our little friend fondly.

Crying... I know, shocker. We are going to miss Fiona, especially Owen. You know how he loved her. And I'll miss her gorgeous eyes. Such a beatuiful dog! She will be missed by all. Our thoughts are with you and Todd tonight. We love you!

Oh poor Fiona. I know you thought it may be soon, but that was very soon. I'm glad you put this memorial together so I could know here a little better. She was an elegant dog and I'm glad I got to meet her!

I admit I will not miss the anxiety she gave me knowing she could nip my crotch at any given moment... but I will never forget how well she tended to me the weekend I was laid out on your couch on pain killers from a snowboarding injury. That was the week I realized I could like that dog. RIP Fiona. Please give Solveig our very best. We will miss you both... and Hannah too, if you see her.

Fiona was one of a kind. I know I didn't see her that often, but I love that dog. Sad. Glad I got to see her in June.

Oh Carrie, I'm so, so sorry. I'm shedding sad tears right now because we didn't get to say good-bye. The kids will be so sad! Thank you Fiona for all the times you took the kids for walks. Thank you for all the times you would walk up and put your sweet face on my lap looking for a little scratch behind the ears and a little love. We will miss her.

-Throwing sticks into the river and seeing her fly off mini-cliffs into the river.
-Pulling my fat butt on a longboard and her loving every minute of it.

Boing Boing, Fiona. I hope she forgave me for the treadmill incident(s).

This makes me surprisingly sad. I know the feeling of loosing a little companion who has always been there. She has been a good buddy. I also loved it when she would come and put her head on my lap for a pat. Fiona, you will be missed but as SJO said, give our greetings to Solveig and Hannah in doggy heaven. Our thoughts are with you.

Oh no. Being that I so love our own big wet-nose-on-the-back-of-my-leg dog.. I really do mourn your loss!
(But is there a reason no one has mentioned her hanging with your Daisy Oscarson or our Freckles Jolly??) May they all be having a ball in the big doggy park in the sky!

Poor Fiona! I'm surprised it was so fast! She looked so sad the other night that I guess I should be happy for her. But I just feel sad for you. It's hard to lose a friend. Even a four-legged friend.

Your love for Fiona is making me hate my dog less. That will be her legacy.

This is Abby on Sarah M's computer:
My heart is hurting for you both. And she does look so sad in those last photos. Poor Fiona. Even a dog who bites crotches should not suffer. I loved her soft ears too and her pretty eyes and how she stalked you. She made me laugh, and you and her together made me laugh. Silly rascal of a dog. Rest in peace, FiFi! Love you Carrie and Todd!

Oh dear, I didn't realize it would make me this sad! You will be missed Fiona. I am so sorry, Carrie and Todd. She really has been there pretty much from the beginning of your marriage. It is hard to imagine your home without her. I am so glad Todd was able to be with her at the end.

And Katy makes a good point... I hope Fiona is playing with ALL of the family dogs!

Sweet sweet puppy. Fiona will be missed so much!! She is such a sweet girl and I love her, beautiful little thing! Even the wet nose on the back of the legs though the crotch biting seems less pleasant.
Bless you guys, I have been thinking about you and feeling so sad that I am not closer to come hang out with you or go on walks (I am good at carrying large sticks too!)
We will miss you Fiona!! Tell Daisy, Hannah and Solveig HELLO for us!

Sorry about Fiona. I remember her when she was a puppy and you guys brought her to the cabin. You kept spraying her with a spray bottle. I think you did that to teach her manners or something?
She was a beautiful dog!

I told my kids the sad news today and they were so sad. They loved Fiona, too. They all are thinking of you.
